Success at World Championships

New Milford, CT September, 2009---GMS
Rowing Center out of New Milford, CT Center was represented at the
Under 23, Junior and Senior World Championships this summer.
At the Under 23 World Championships
held in Raddice, Czech Republic GMS was represented by Victoria
Burke (Redding, CT) in the lightweight Women’s Quad and by
Mike Orzolek (New Milford, CT and Mercyhurst College) in the Men’s
Lightweight Single Sculls. Burke, rowing in the stroke seat, won
a silver medal and Orzolek didn’t win a medal but had a respectable
showing in large and competitive field.
Both rowers enjoyed the experience
of racing against the best in the world. “You
were battling against the other rowers, but it was such a friendly
atmosphere and exciting to engage other cultures” said Burke.
“I am not happy with my showing but I am not upset either.
It will make me better for next year”, said Orzolek.
In Brive, France Kimberly Hopewell
(Ridgefield, CT) rowed in the Women’s Quadruple Scull. Hopewell
started rowing at GMS over three years ago. “It’s
a pretty long drive from Ridgefield to GMS,” Hopewell
said. “But there is an expectation
of success and they prep you to go on and succeed at the highest
level.” This fall Hopewell starts at Princeton where
she plans to try and earn a spot on the varsity eight women’s
boat. She also intends to continue training in the lightweight boats
in an effort to prepare for the Under 23 World Championships and
the 2012 London Olympics.
At the Senior Worlds, in Poznan
Poland Bryan Tryon (GMS) and Jonathan Winter (GMS) represented the
US in the Lightweight Quadruple Sculls earning 6th place in the
A Final in a tight race. Brian Deregt (GMS) rowed in the Lwt Coxless
Four and earned 12th place. All three are members of the GMS High
Performance Scullers group.
